Title
OV-1 High-Level Operational Concept Graphic Subview Subview
Version & Date
1.6 See DNDAF Release History
Introduction
The OV-1 subview is part of the DNDAF Operationall View.
The Operational View-1 (OV-1): High-Level Operational Concept Graphic describes the concept of operation and highlights the main aspects of the architecture. It provides a description of both internal and external influences.
Purpose
The purpose of OV-1 sub-view is to provide a concise and illustrative high-level description of what the architecture project will deliver, in what manner, in which environment, using which assets involving which organizations, roles and/or organization types. This sub-view is used to orient and focus stakeholder discussions.
Background
The High-Level Operational Concept Graphic is a graphical representation of the “Concept of Operations” (CONOPS). Its main utility is for presentation and discussions. A textual explanation accompanying the graphic is crucial, as graphics alone are not sufficient for describing the architectural components.
Description
Definition
The OV-1 is the high-level graphical and associated textual description of the Operational Concepts for the architecture project.
Detailed Description
The OV-1 conveys what the architecture project is “about” by giving an overview of the concepts, major factors and interactions between the factors. The sub-view consists of one or more graphics, as well as explanatory text, which along with the CV-1 form the Executive Summary for the architecture project.
The textual and graphical content of OV-1 illustrate the scope and intent of the architecture. In general, OV-1 will describe the missions, high-level operations, organizations, and distribution of assets. The OV-1 will frame the operational concepts in terms of:
- what needs to be accomplished i.e. high level functions,
- who does what i.e. organizations, actors,
- utilizing what assets and resources,
- why and for what purpose i.e. motivation, and
- where will this activity occur i.e. interactions to the environment and other external systems.
Subview DADM Elements
The DADM entities and attributes provided below are the elements that this sub-view is responsible for creating:
Presentation
- graphical
OV-1 is the most general of the architecture sub-views and is also the most flexible in format; therefore, no specific format is prescribed for this sub-view. As a minimum, this sub-view consists of one or more graphical representations capturing the concept of operations supported by textual descriptions. A graphical example is shown below.

Prerequisites
The CV-1 is the prerequisite for this sub-view:
- CV-1. The CV-1 provides the scope of the OV-1. As the OV-1 is developed the scope will be more fully understood and will affect changes to the CV-1.
