Title

SV-9 Systems Technology Forecast Subview

Version & Date

1.6 See DNDAF Release History

Introduction

The SV-9 subview is part of the DNDAF System View.

The System View-9 (SV-9): Systems Technology Forecast provides a description of emerging technologies and specific hardware and software products that may impact the systems and business processes covered by the architecture project..

Purpose

The SV-9 provides a summary of emerging technologies that impact the architecture and its planned systems. The focus should be on the supporting technologies that may most affect the capabilities of the architecture or its systems.

Background

The SV-9 provides descriptions of relevant: emerging capabilities, industry trends, and predictions of the availability and readiness of specific hardware and software products.

In addition to providing an inventory of trends, capabilities and products, the SV-9 also includes an assessment of the potential impact of these items on the architecture. Given the future-oriented nature of this product, forecasts are typically made in short, mid and long-term timeframes, such as up to 2 years, two to six years and more than six years intervals.

Description

Definition

The Systems Technology Forecast defines the underlying current and expected supporting technologies. It is not expected to include predictions of technologies as with a crystal ball. Expected supporting technologies are those that can be reasonably forecast given the current state of technology and expected improvements. New technologies should be tied to specific time periods, which can correlate against the time periods used in SV-8 milestones.

Detailed Description

The SV-9 provides a detailed description of emerging technologies and specific hardware and software products. It contains predictions about the availability of emerging technological capabilities and about industry trends in specific time periods. The specific time periods selected (e.g., 6-month, 12-month, 18- month intervals) and the technologies being tracked should be coordinated with architecture evolution plans (see SV-8). That is, insertion of new technological capabilities and upgrading of existing systems may depend on or be driven by the availability of new technology. The forecast includes potential technology impacts on current architectures and thus influences the development of transition and target architectures. The forecast should be focused on technology areas that are related to the purpose for which a given architecture is being described and should identify issues that will affect the architecture.

Presentation

From section 3.23.7, volume 2:

The SV-9 is constructed as part of a given architecture and in accordance with the architecture purpose. Typically, this will involve starting with one or more overarching reference models or standards profiles to which the architecture project must use, such as the TV-1. Using these reference models or standards profiles, the architect should select the domains and technical services relevant to the architecture. The SV- 9 forecasts relate to the Technical Standards Profile (TV-1) in that a timed technology forecast may contribute to the decision to retire or phase out the use of a certain standard in connection with a system element. Similarly, SV-9 forecasts relate to TV-1 standards forecasts in that a certain standard may be adopted depending on a certain technology becoming available.

The template organization is based on the DTSL domain categories. The template entries contain the names of example technologies and summary status predictions.

Prerequisites

The SV-7, SV-8 and TV-1 are prerequisites for this sub-view:

  • SV-7.Systems Technology Forecast uses the Systems Performance Parameters.
  • SV-8.Systems Technology Forecast uses the Systems Evolution Description.
  • TV-1. SV-9 uses TV-1 for documenting technology standards emerging or evolving standards relevant to the systems covered by the architecture project.

Comments

The DNDAF does not have a view nor subviews concerned with the acquisition/procurement of systems via projects by which time could otherwise be introduced.
