SV-2 Systems Communications Description Subview

Version & Date

1.6 See DNDAF Release History

The SV-2 subview is part of the DNDAF System View.

The System View-2 (SV-2): System Communications Description is required to represent the systems communications inside and between the nodes that are defined in the OV-2 and developed in the SV-1 for the architecture project. This sub-view provides a descriptive and visual representation of all the systems, all the nodes and all the networks under consideration.

The Systems Communications Description is used to document how system interfaces described in SV-1 are supported by physical media. This kind of communications media support information is critical in performing certain infrastructure and systems acquisition decisions.

The existence of disparate and heterogeneous systems within DND/CF makes it very difficult to provide an optimal support and accurate analysis of the current state. Therefore planning and developing new approaches for the desired future state is very complex and difficult to manage. For this purpose the content of the SV-2 sub-view elaborates in detail many aspects of the operational sub-views represented in OV-2. It also expands and complements the SV-1 from the communications perspective; i.e., adds more detailed representation of the communication interfaces.

The Systems Communications Description depicts pertinent information about communications systems, communications links, and services (e.g., the kind of processing performed onboard a satellite, the locations of network switches or routers, the existence of amplifiers or repeaters in a particular communications link, or the location of cable “bulkheads” on both shores of an ocean).

Detailed Description

The Systems Communications Description documents the specific communications links or networks and the details of their configurations through which systems interface. While the Systems Interface Description (SV-1) depicts interfaces between systems or systems nodes, the Systems Communications Description (SV-2) contains a detailed description of each SV-1 interface (e.g., composing parts of the interface including communications systems, multiple communications links, networks, routers, and gateways).

Communications systems are systems whose primary function is to control the transfer and movement of data or information as opposed to performing mission application processing. Examples of communications systems include network switches, routers, and communications satellites.
A communications link is a single physical connection from one system (or node) to another. A pathway is a (connected) sequence of communications systems and links from one system (or node) to another.

A network may contain multiple pathways between the same pair of systems. The term “interface” used in the SV-1 Systems Interface Description and referenced in SV-2 represents an abstraction of a pathway(s).

The graphical presentation and supporting text for the Systems Communications Description should describe all pertinent communications attributes (e.g., waveform, bandwidth, radio frequency, packet or waveform encryption methods). Communications standards are also documented in this sub-view where applicable.

Because the Systems Communications Description details the interfaces described in the Systems Interface Description, by decomposing them into communications systems, communications links, and networks, it can present either inter-nodal or intra-nodal versions. The inter-nodal version details the communications links and/or networks that interconnect systems nodes (node edge-to-node edge) or specific systems (system-system from one node to other nodes). The intra-nodal version of the Systems Communications Description looks inside each of the represented nodes to illustrate the communications links between specific systems.
