Overview

The NAV-2 Integrated Dictionary subview is part of the NATO All View and one of the 47 NATO Architecture Framework subviews.

Version & Date

Version 3.0

See NAF Release History.

Purpose

From the NATO Architecture Framework v3, CHAPTER 4, Section 4.3.2

The purpose of the NAV-2 subview is to clearly and unambiguously define the terms used to describe the architecture, and to, consequently:

  • provide consistency across subviews;
  • provide consistency across architectures;
  • facilitate architecture development, validation, maintenance, and reuse;
  • trace architecture data to authoritative data sources;

Covered by NATO release conditions.

Definition

From the NATO Architecture Framework v3, CHAPTER 4, Section 4.3.2

The Integrated Dictionary contains definitions of terms used in architecture descriptions, where all definitions provide reference to the information sources. NAV-2 allows the set of architectural products to stand alone so that they can be read and understood uniformly. NAV-2 is an accompanying reference to other products, and its value lies in unambiguous definitions. The key to long-term interoperability can reside in the accuracy and clarity of these definitions.

Covered by NATO release conditions.

From the NATO Architecture Framework v3, CHAPTER 5, Section 5.2.2.2

The data in an NAV-2 can include:

  • Ontology References
  • Specializations Relationships (Subtyping)
  • Type-Instance Relationships

Each entry in an Integrated Dictionary should display the following properties:

  • The name used for this element in the architecture
  • Alternative names for this element- e.g. if the element is listed in the NATO ontology it may have multiple names
  • A brief description of the element
  • A list of the Views in which the element is used

Covered by NATO release conditions.

Comments

‘consistency across architectures’ should read ‘consistency across architecture descriptions’ - the NAV-2 promotes consistency across the models of the architecture(s) not the actual architecture being modelled. See Architecture vs Architecture Description.
