Version 3.0

See NAF Release History.

Purpose

From the NATO Architecture Framework v3, CHAPTER 4, Section 4.7.10.2

The explicit time sequencing of system interaction in response to external and internal events is not fully expressed in NSV-1, NSV-2 and NSV-4. A Systems State Transition Description (NSV-10b) can be used to describe the explicit sequencing of system interactions, using states and state transitions, brought on by triggers and events.

A state transition description can often allow quick analysis of the completeness of the rule set, and detection of dead ends or missing conditions. These errors, if not detected early during the systems analysis phase, can often lead to serious behavioural errors in fielded systems, or to expensive correction efforts.

Covered by NATO release conditions.

Definition

From the NATO Architecture Framework v3, CHAPTER 4, Section 4.7.10.2

The product relates states, events, and actions. A state and its associated action(s) specify the response of a system to events. When an event occurs, the next state may vary depending on the current state (and its associated action), the event, and the rule set. A change of state is called a transition. Each transition specifies the response based on a specific event and the current state. Actions may be associated with a given state or with the transition between states.

Covered by NATO release conditions.

From the NATO Architecture Framework v3, CHAPTER 5, Section 5.2.6.10

The data in an NSV-10b can include:
