View NAF:NCV-6 Operational Activity to Capability Mapping Subview
Overview
The NCV-6 Capability to Operational Activities Mapping subview is part of the NATO Capability View and one of the 49 NATO Architecture Framework subviews*.
Version & Date
Version 3.1
* = changed at 3.1
+ = new at 3.1
The change history is derived from the definition of each NATO Architecture view within section 5.2.3 NATO Capability View (NCV)
in AC/322(SC/1-WG/1)N(2009)0005-ADD2. NATO Architecture Framework Version 3.1
document from https://www.nhqc3s.nato.int/Browser.asp?Target=_docs/NAF_v3_1 .
See NAF Release History.
Purpose
From the NATO Architecture Framework v3
, CHAPTER 4, Section 4.4.6
The Capability to Operational Activities Mapping (NCV-6) subview describes the mapping between capability elements and the operational activities that those capabilities support.
Because military functions are seen as types of capabilities (as defined in NCV-2) NCV-6 also illustrates to what degree military functions are supported, i.e. whether operational activities do not, or only partially support military functions (so called
gapsorwhite spots), or whether military functions are supported by more than one operational activity (addressing redundancy).
Covered by NATO release conditions.
Description
From the NATO Architecture Framework v3
, CHAPTER 4, Section 4.4.6
An NCV-6 subview shows which capabilities may be utilized in support of specific operational activities. The NCV-6 subview provides a bridge between capability analyses using NCVs and operational activities as defined by NOVs. Specifically, it identifies how operational activities can be performed using various available capability elements.
Covered by NATO release conditions.
Data Objects
From the NATO Architecture Framework v3.1
, CHAPTER 5, Section 5.2.3.6
The data in an NCV-5 can include:

This diagram is taken from MODAF 1.2.004 MODAF::StV-6 Operational Activity to Capability Mapping View as it is almost identical to that in NAF 3.1 with the following substitutions for view/subview number:
- MODAF::StV-6 equates to NAF::NCV-6 Capability to Operational Activities Mapping Subview
- MODAF::StV-2 equates to NAF::NCV-2
- MODAF::StV-1 equates to NAF::NCV-6 Capability to Operational Activities Mapping Subview
- MODAF::OV-5 equates to NAF::NOV-5 Operational Activity Model Subview

Comments
Standard Operational Activity
doesn’t appear to be defined in the NATO Architecture Framework Metamodel (NMM). It is assumed that it is the same as Operational Activity
.
The NCV-6 is variously called NCV-6 Capability to Operational Activities Mapping Subview in Chapter 4 and NCV-6 Operational Activity to Capability Mapping Subview in Chapter 5 so it’s not obvious what the proper title is.
Note that the NATO AF 3.1 documentation isn’t yet in a consistent state - it appears to be in the process of changing Subview to View but still has view meaning both an individual (view) specification and a collection of (view) specifications. It is also confused between a view as a specification and the product of that specification.
