Evidence is a fundamental part of the Claim - Argument - Evidence (CAE) structure used in describing the structure of an assurance case such as that used for safety assurance (or a safety case as it used to be called in “old money”). Evidence is essential to the substantiation of any claim and the support or opposition of any argument.

The Evidence element together with the structured argument(s) supports planning for the gathering of the evidence needed.

For the (design) verification against a requirement there is typically the following structure in terms of Claim - Argument Evidence:-

  1. System of Interest / Part X meets the requirement to ... [the Claim]
  2. System of Interest is able to .... under .... whilst [the Argument]
  3. Report CC paragraph of the cold soak environmental test shows that [quote the statement that answers the claim directly] [the Evidence]

In TRAK evidence takes the form of a document artefact which can therefore include any type of media. Evidence identification captures identifies statement(s) that offer proof and define artefact as evidence.
